HRA After the 8th Pay Commission
House Rent Allowance is a share of basic pay that depends on your city. When the 7th CPC raised basic pay, the HRA rates were cut from 30/20/10% to 24/16/8%, then stepped back up as DA crossed 25% and 50%. The same could happen again.
| City | Today (30/20/10%) | If 24/16/8% | If 30/20/10% stays |
|---|---|---|---|
| Big metro city (X) | ₹13,470 | ₹20,688 | ₹25,860 |
| Other big city (Y) | ₹8,980 | ₹13,792 | ₹17,240 |
| Small town or village (Z) | ₹4,490 | ₹6,896 | ₹8,620 |
How HRA works today
- 30% of basic pay in X cities, 20% in Y cities and 10% in Z places, because DA is above 50%.
- At least ₹5,400, ₹3,600 and ₹1,800 a month.
- X cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Pune. Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Faridabad are paid at Delhi rates.
- The rates stepped up from 24/16/8% when DA crossed 25% (July 2021) and to 30/20/10% when it reached 50% (January 2024).
